More "Vacation" Pix

A few more pictures from our trip a few weeks ago.

The photographer aboard our cruise ship managed to get a closeup of Madeleine at dinner - never before in the history of photography has something so beautiful and yet so messy been captured on film in the same shot.

Once she cleaned herself up, though, Madeleine took her rightful place with the Disney princesses - in this case, Princess Aurora (a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty).

We had so many new goodies from our cruise and our visit in Florida that we didn't have enough room for them in our luggage - when the leftovers came in the mail from Grandma and Grandpa, Madeleine supervised the unpacking process firsthand.

Baby's Night Out

Dining with the little one is often an adventure, but the photographers on our cruise managed to capture a moment of happiness and relative cleanliness to get a great family shot. Take a close look at the table to see why we gave the serving staff a nice tip!

Walking Update

Madeleine had her long-awaited trip to the pediatric orthopedist yesterday. While he is not overly concerned that she isn't walking yet at close to the 18 month mark and didn't find any significant structural problems in her feet/legs, he does think that she should start to use a small brace on her ankles to give her a little more support (thanks, Grandma Mary) and do a bit of physical therapy to improve her coordination and move the process along (thanks, Grandpa Tom).

If we were still in Virginia, we would already have the braces and our first physical therapy appointment lined up. Of course, this being California, nothing works that easily (see Daddy's diatribe on the California health care system beneath the photos).

We've noticed that she's gaining a lot more confidence in trying to stand up on her own over the last week or so - perhaps it's just a matter of putting all the pieces together.

Daddy's Soapbox/Editorial Moment: While Daddy's days at the epicenter of public policy are (thankfully) over, we have been watching the national debate on health care with some degree of interest. The system is clearly screwed up and in desperate need of repair - but I hope our national leaders don't look to California as a model of what to do.

California is one of the only states in the country that not only has HMOs and insurance companies - but something called physician groups - large groups of doctors who band together to protect themselves against the HMOs as well as trying to provide some degree of cost savings through the strength-in-numbers approach. In theory, this should work well - allowing doctors to reduce overhead costs by pooling resources and have greater leverage versus insurance company bureaucrats. In practice, these groups essentially behave as mini-HMOs - meaning that every health care transaction engages not one, but two soulless health care bureaucracies who care more about forms and authorization numbers than getting treatment for their patients.

The upshot of all of this is that it will take at least two weeks to get the "authorization" for Madeleine's ankle braces - and the physical therapy group has told us that they do not have any appointments available through the rest of the calendar year. Yes, that's right - it's June and we have to be wait-listed for the rest of the year. Even worse, we don't have the right to go to another provider not affiliated with that physician group because it would be considered "out of network" even if the other provider accepts our insurance plan.

Who suffers under this kind of system? Our kid. But no one seems to care except us.

I hope the national health care debate has moved beyond the Hillarycare days and can produce not only a rational discussion but also an intelligent and financially sustainable solution. But I hope and pray that our dear leaders in Washington don't look to the most populous state in the country for ideas, because they ain't here.

The reality is that healthcare run by government bureaucrats isn't the solution but neither is the current system run by HMO and physician group bureaucrats - the entire financial and legal structure underpinning the delivery of health care is just flawed and needs to be fixed to get the middleman out of the doctor-patient relationship as much as possible.

I don't think the current crop of political leaders is up to the task but I hope I'm wrong!

Our First Visitors to Southern California

Last month, Madeleine got to see lots of her family from Mommy's side when they came down to Southern California - her first out-of-town visitors in the new place.

Grandma Kay endeared herself to Madeleine through the usual route - the stomach.

Madeleine was VERY upset when she learned that Grandpa Bob and Grandma Kay would be going back home. She enjoyed the time with Grandpa Bob so much that she gave him a name - Baba - and has subsequently taken to calling Grandpa Tom and Grandpa Steve Baba as well when she saw them over the last few weeks.

Uncle Paul and Aunt Andrea came down with Cousin Taylor and the newest cousins, Harper and Beckett, on their way to Palm Springs. It's the first time all 4 cousins have been together at once - and thankfully Aunt Andrea captured the moment - even if not everyone wanted to look at the camera at the same time!

Whirlwind Travel

The last few weeks have been a blur of travel and visitors from out-of-town. The weekend before our trip to Florida, Madeleine was off to Portland, Oregon for her Uncle Drew's wedding.

She also got to see Cousin Dixie, who babysat for her while Mommy and Daddy were at the wedding. She got to see Grandma Molly and Grandpa Tom but missed out on seeing Cousin Dillon for the first time. Unfortunately, Daddy's pictures of those moments didn't turn out too well - so you're stuck with the pictures that did turn out.

Madeleine found the seats on Alaska Airlines to be most satisfactory.

Grandpa Tom entertained her on the merry-go-round in Salem, Oregon.

Madeleine wasn't sure what to make of Grandpa's antics as she pondered the genetic legacy he leaves to her!

Castaway Baby

Madeleine had a great day at the beach on Castaway Cay, Disney's private island in the Bahamas. Yes, that's a pirate ship in the foreground - it's the actual Flying Dutchman from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

No trip to the beach would be complete without a sandbucket and shovel.

Daddy caught a very strong little flounder in the bay off the family beach.

Thankfully, Daddy's a catch-and-release type of guy.....

On her way back to the ship, Madeleine saw Pluto making a beeline for the air conditioning on a hot Caribbean day.

Shoes and Socks

Two of Madeleine's favorite words are "shoe" and "sock." She learned shoe a few weeks ago, and Grandma Mary and Grandpa Steve taught her to say sock while babysitting her on our Disney cruise.

Madeleine enjoys trying on Mommy's shoes and gets mad when they don't exactly fit.

She also experimented with putting her own socks on - but didn't quite figure out how to do it.

Our Disney Cruise

Madeleine went on a 3-day Disney Cruise last week with Mommy, Daddy, Grandpa Steve and Grandma Mary. Although she's not quite old enough to enjoy all of the kids' activities on board, she still had a great time.

Madeleine loved playing on the balcony of our stateroom - and sitting in the deck chair to enjoy the view. Don't worry - the balcony was childproofed.

There was a special pool for little ones who aren't quite potty trained - she loved the little interactive fountains in the pool.

Have to test the water temperature before getting in.

Family Time in Florida

After our cruise, we spent a few days at Walt Disney World in Orlando - and got to catch up with Madeleine's extended family on both sides, who drove in from all over Florida to see her!

Cousins Drayton, Rhonda, Jaydin and Savanna kept our girl entertained throughout dinner.

Aunt Dianne and Madeleine shared some smiles together.

Jaydin loved hanging out with Mommy and Cousin Madeleine.

Savanna and Madeleine enjoyed giggling at each other and making faces across the table.

It was a muggy day to be walking around Downtown Disney but we had a great time catching up!

Aunt Sheree and Uncle Jonathan drove all the way from Tampa to see Madeleine last Tuesday - and Madeleine even let Sheree brush her hair.

Although it was REALLY hot and muggy during our whole time in Florida, it was worth a few bad hair days to catch up with everyone.

It Never Rains in Southern California

Other than the architecture, the picture below isn't anything out of the ordinary - just a typical rainy day.

Ah, but there's the rub - as the song says, "It never rains in Southern California." Today, for the first time in the six-ish weeks that we've been here, it rained. Maybe it's rained somewhere else in this region over the last 6 weeks, but this is the first rain we've seen. Every day, the weather is remarkably similar - upper 70s or low 80s during the day after some morning fog, upper 50s or low 60s at night.

It's amazing how much time people spend outside here - like it's an extension of their living rooms. After a bitterly cold winter in Virginia, we could get used to this definition of "lousy weather" pretty quickly.
